The Aldrin Family Foundation aims to create the game changers of tomorrow through their Giant Moon MapTM and Giant Mars MapTM program. The People’s Picture is a photography and design studio from British artist Helen Marshall. Every artwork is made up of thousands of photos yet every single one tells a story.

“We started The People’s Moon project to include the public in the celebration of humanity’s most significant exploration achievement”, says Christina Korp of the Aldrin Family Foundation, co-founder of The People’s Moon. “So often people think it’s only for people in the space and science world. But I’ve been so privileged to spend a lot of time with the Apollo astronauts and to have been the witness to people from all walks of life all over the world share their emotional stories of watching or listening to the first moon landing. This event 50 years ago inspired a generation to have hope and pursue their own giants leaps and “impossible” dreams. During this 50th Anniversary, we want to bring people together to share this moment – to look up at the moon and have hope again. I feel we need to remember that we all share that same moon and it reminds us we’re humans together on the same planet.”
“On July 20, 1969, the world was united as one, when humans achieved the ‘impossible’ dream of landing and walking on the Moon,” said Andrew Aldrin, President of the Aldrin Family Foundation. “Our goal is to recapture that spirit and give thousands the opportunity to put themselves in the place where only 12 men have gone before and to share this historic moment, just like people did 50 years ago. Through this celebration, we hope to inspire today’s generation, give them hope for the future like Apollo did for generations before, and help them realize that their own ‘giant leap’ is right within their grasp.”
“The Apollo Program was accomplished as a result of the efforts of more than 400,000 people working together to achieve an impossible dream,” said Therrin Protze, chief operating officer of Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. “This project gives thousands of people from around the world an opportunity to become a lasting part of the historic and important 50th anniversary of the first Moon landing and walk.”
On behalf of the US space agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA),Mike Kincaid, associate administrator of NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement said: “As America celebrates the 50th anniversary of Apollo, it’s critical that we inspire younger people to take their own ‘giant leap’ in science, technology, engineering, arts and math. “NASA’s Artemis program will put the first woman and next man on the Moon, and send the first humans to Mars. We hope young people across the country – the Artemis generation – will come with us on this journey.”
Derek Manns, Digital Advertising Manager at Landsec, which operates the Piccadilly Lightssaid: “Piccadilly Lights is renowned for capturing the eyes and minds of over 300 million people that pass through Piccadilly Circus each year. This interactive experience from The People’s Moon is a great opportunity to unite people all over the world, and we’re excited to be part of the celebrations for this inspiring moment in our history.”
UK’s House of Lords debated the impact of the Moon landings and The People’s Moon Members of the House of Lords (the upper house of the UK Parliament) with a special debate on Monday 15th July. (https://www.parliament.uk/business/lords/) Lord Andrew Mawson OBE led the debate, giving a national focus in the UK for the anniversary of a phenomenal human achievement.
“The debate explored the impact of the first Moon landing on science and technology and our understanding of ourselves, and more importantly what its implications will be for future generations,” said Lord Mawson. “It’s an opportunity for reflection on what we can learn from this achievement when applied to the culture we create for our own achievements, through simply believing something is possible.” says Lord Andrew Mawson.
Previous photo mosaic tributes by British artist Helen Marshall have ranged from the centenary of the outbreak of World War One and the People’s Monarch celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee, to the Face of Suffrage marking the 100th anniversary of British women getting the vote and numerous community and corporate commissions.
NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre Visitor Complex has also commissioned British artist Marshall to create a permanent exhibit: the interactive digital photo mosaic will be installed in the Apollo/Saturn V Center as part of the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11 celebration. The mission, which launched from Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969, brought Astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins to the Moon, where Armstrong took the historic first steps.
Educational Activities – The Aldrin Family Foundation will display its signature Giant Moon MapTM and Giant Mars MapTM. Plus, there will be special robotic and educational activities on the maps hosted by the Aldrin Family Foundation to teach kids about the history of past lunar landings and future space exploration plans.
Historical Footage – The Discovery Channel will provide the video content to help guests relive key moments from the July 16, 1969, Saturn V rocket launch, as well as the July 20, 1969 Moon landing and first steps. Artist Helen Marshall’s People’s Moon animation – along with videos promoting future space missions – will be broadcasted throughout the day over select digital screens in Times Square. Clear Channel Outdoor, Champ Sports, Nickelodeon, Nasdaq and Viacom have generously donated screen time in Times Square and Clear Channel Outdoor has also donated space in select locations on billboards across the country.
The Singapore Space and Technology Association is also partnering The People’s Moon. It has encouraged public submissions from the region and will include a special preview of The People’s Moon artwork and historic sequences prepared by co-producer Jonathan Levy of UK based Blue Aurora Media in the ArtScience Museum’s Moongazers programme.
The photo mosaics will also have a permanent home on ThePeoplesMoon.com until 2024, the year in which the US Space Agency NASA and its international partners aim to return humans to the Moon, including the first woman to walk on the Lunar surface.
